Position Summary
The Senior Merchant is responsible for ensuring the development, execution, and communication of a merchandise strategy that meets or exceeds financial plans.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Must have experience in management of the following areas:
- Financial:
- Analyze economic, financial, market, competitive/+noncompetitive and industry data to assess current business strategies or identify future business opportunities. Assume the customer’s perspective and ensure merchandising strategies will meet customers needs (current and future).
- Responsible for all aspects of driving sales, margin, and turn within category of responsibility.
- Work with analysts to create reports to analyze sales, margin, and inventory and identify trends and recommend and execute business opportunities and minimize risks.
- Identify new trends and opportunities, evaluate merchandise mix, evaluate competition, and translate findings into executable product plans.
- Partner with Finance to complete top down and bottoms up planning for category both seasonally and monthly in OTB.
- Analyze OTB and take action as needed, recommending changes to future on- orders, RTV's, pricing or markdown strategies.
- Marketing:
- Manage internal and external category communication.
- Develop a strategy for assortment, pricing, and advertising.
- Leverage vendor relationships and product development team to deliver exclusive products to all channels of the business.
- Leverage vendor relationships to gain knowledge and data as it pertains to product category. Utilize established relationships in product selection and pricing negotiations.
- Ensure effective advertising in all channels by ensuring delivery of advertised product, executing price changes, store signage, and communication to the stores.
- Leads marketing strategy for either Hard Goods or Soft Goods seasonally, with key vendors, and at key marketing time periods.
- Build, create, and manage merchandise assortments, by category, through existing and new brands that align with market and consumer trends
- Execute assortment plans, product selection/sourcing, pricing, vendor negotiations and promotional marketing.
- Work with merchandise support staff to ensure proper stock levels and fill rates.
- Create and provide direction for store planning, signage and visual merchandising.
- Formulate pricing strategies, negotiate discounts when appropriate, and execute markdown strategy.
- Support daily internal deadlines and goals of other departments.
- Prepare and oversee store communication for area of responsibility.
- Respond to and identify store and customer needs and make appropriate adjustment in financial plans.
- Works with Chief Merchandising Officer on key initiatives and can represent merchandising department in key meetings.
- Human Resources and Development:
- Maintain expert knowledge of industry through store visits and competitive analysis.
- Monitor and provide development and training of associate merchant and merchant support staff.
- Required to train and develop (possible mentorship) of less-seasoned merchants.
Qualifications and Skills Required:
- Experience: 5-10 years of experience in a retail-buying environment is required.
- Proven proficiency in both a brick and mortar and online retail environment.
- Experience managing a business is preferred (financial, operational, process, people, technology, etc.).
- Strong financial and business analysis skills, including KPI interpretation and decision-making based on financial drivers.
- Solid understanding of financial levers and how to influence business outcomes through data driven decisions.
- Proven analytical and problem-solving ability.
- Ability to draw conclusions from financial documentation.
- Experience managing several hundred vendor contracts simultaneously.
- Ability to multi-task.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Must be able to work well in a team environment and work independently.
- Proficiency in Excel, Power BI, SQL, Tableau, and PowerPoint (MS office).
- Excellent follow-through and attention to detail.
- Commitment to customer service for both external and internal customers.
- Knowledge and passion for Golf or Tennis preferred.
- Must be assertive and eager to grow in an extremely fast-paced organization.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to stand and/or sit for extended periods of time as the job is completed primarily at a desk each day. Variable desk heights are offered so alternatively sitting and/or standing at the desk is optional.
- Flexibility to work extended and varying hours as needed.
Travel:
- 10% of travel is required.
