Under general supervision, incumbent is predominantly involved with the preparation of indirect tax compliance (e.g., sales/use taxes) and ad valorem tax compliance (e.g., property taxes), planning and research as well as financial reporting. Provide overall audit support for State and local indirect and ad valorem tax audits. The incumbent is considered a junior member of the staff group that works on projects with various leadership personnel including, but not limited to, the Senior Tax Accountant, Tax Manager, and Senior Tax Director.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Tax Compliance
- Prepare and/or review calculations used for preparation of state and local sales/use tax and Canadian GST/HST/PST/QST returns (e.g., exempt sales, taxable sales, taxable purchases, taxable consumption on no-charge promotional items, etc.)
- Prepare and/or review calculations used for preparation of state and local property tax returns (e.g., Texas Freeport exemption).
- Prepare and/or review sales/use tax, Canadian GST/HST/PST/QST, and property tax returns prepared internally or by outside providers and recommend approval for payment.
- Prepare and/or review bank account reconciliations.
- Prepare and/or review miscellaneous compliance filings including, but not limited to, unclaimed property, annual reports/business licenses, and excise tax.
- Assist with the development and execution of sales/use tax, Canadian GST/HST/PST/QST, and property tax compliance strategies.
Financial reporting
- Assist with financial reporting calculations regarding Financial Accounting Standards No. 5, Accounting for Contingencies as applicable.
Audit Preparation, Support and Management
- Assist with state and local sales/use tax, Canadian GST/HST/PST/QST, and property tax audits and appeals.
- Assist with the development and execution of tax audit strategies.
- Communicate directly with external government auditors and respond to information requests.
- Generate technical responses to inquiries from auditors.
Research and Planning
- Conduct and document research related to sales/use tax, Canadian GST/HST/PST/QST, and property tax compliance issues as needed.
- Facilitate departmental communication with business groups such as Accounting, Credit, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Legal and Purchasing to ensure sales/use tax and property tax reporting is in compliance.
TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES (Knowledge, Skills & Abilities)
- General knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, specifically Word and Excel
- General 10-key operation skills
- SAP or equivalent financial accounting system knowledge preferred
- General time management skills
- Knowledge and use of sales/use tax compliance software (Vertex preferred)
- General understanding of accounting/business concepts and principles
- General understanding of general documentation procedures for tax compliance and research
- Able to learn and apply concepts to multiple tasks
- Able to analyze data and propose recommendations
- Able to effectively communicate in both written and oral form
- Able to work independently
- Able to effectively work as part of a team toward meeting department goals
- Able to support department personnel
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience required.
- Minimum 1 year experience preparing and/or reviewing sales/use tax, Canadian GST/HST/PST/QST, and property tax reports preferred.
- General experience with sales/use tax, Canadian GST/HST/PST/QST, and property tax concepts preferred.
- Documentation of continuing professional education course work, preferred.
- CPA preferred but not required.
**Please note -- Position will be performed in a hybrid environment and candidate is expected to be in the office at least 3 days each week with additional time in the office week as necessary for critical project or during monthly close procedures.
