JOB OVERVIEW
The Manager, Performance Gear Design, will manage the product design team within Callaway Golf’s Performance Gear categories (Golf Bags, Travel Gear, Headwear, Gloves, and Accessories). This role combines hands-on design leadership with a thoughtful leadership approach. With a strong understanding of product and market trends, the Manager will guide the creation of innovative, functional, and on-brand designs. The Manager will provide day-to-day direction, support, and development for the design team while ensuring creative output aligns with business goals and timelines. Success in this role requires the ability to balance creativity with the design process and attention to detail while ensuring that ideas are both visionary and executable. The Manager must also be skilled at filtering and incorporating feedback, refining concepts while maintaining design integrity with a positive attitude. This role partners cross-functionally with Category Management, Product Development, and Program Management to bring compelling product stories from concept to production.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Oversee product design within Callaway Golf’s Performance Gear product categories (Golf Bags, Travel Gear, Headwear, Gloves, and Accessories).
Guide, support, and inspire a team of designers by fostering a collaborative and innovative work environment that promotes creative exploration and growth.
Manage the collaboration and process of concept ideation, innovation, and stories for new products with the Design Team, Category Product Managers, Executive Leaders, and Developers.
Develop elevated, consumer-focused designs that balance innovation, functionality, and brand identity.
Utilize product and project management systems to track designs, monitor progress, and ensure accountability.
Translate concepts into technical product drawings (Tech Packs) with detailed specifications for development and production.
Initiate periodic market research and focus groups within domestic and international markets to identify key trends, technologies and better understand the consumer response to proposed design decisions.
Leverage insights into informing and refine design strategies that resonate with Callaway’s target audience.
Manage the product design process, calendar, traffic, and prioritization of products.
Attend and initiate all relevant design/product meetings as required.
TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES
Must possess a portfolio of Golf Bags, Headwear, Gloves, Travel Gear and Accessories.
Passion for Golf and product design. Previous Golf or Sporting Goods Industry experience required.
Expert level proficiency with Adobe CC and Microsoft Office programs required.
Familiarity with management systems such as Centric, Monday or Asana which are used daily.
2D and 3D design and prototyping skills.
Strong concept and design skills combined with a sense of style and color.
Proficiency in Technical illustration and sketching and shading.
Ability to manage and track projects from brief to tech pack.
Finalize tech packages and proactively follow the execution of all product details: construction, color, form, style, performance, cost/value requirements etc.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
College Degree in Industrial or Fashion Design or a related field.
Minimum 6 years of related design experience with a focus on Golf or Sporting Goods Equipment.
Minimum 4 years of experience leading a team of designers in a fast pace, innovation driven environment.
Strong organizational skills combined with outstanding verbal and visual communicative ability.
