This position oversees and manages the product testing labs and equipment, combining hands-on technical responsibilities with day-to-day lab operations. They are responsible for standardizing, maintaining and improving test equipment, as well as protocols to support the development and manufacturing of our next generations of breakthrough products. This person also manages the lab technicians and work request queues. This position requires a strong mechanical engineering background combined with people management skills. Experience with quality and manufacturing processes, measurement instruments and machinery, and management of labs and staff is critical.
Essential Functions and Key Responsibilities:
· Conduct high-level technical inspections and provide expert advice on complex engineering projects, ensuring quality and precision.
· Develop and enhance testing protocols and procedures to improve lab capabilities, quality, and throughput.
· Ensure quality control in the lab by improving and maintaining equipment, protocols, and data integrity.
· Oversee the maintenance and calibration of lab equipment to ensure optimal performance and accuracy.
· Implement and monitor health and safety protocols for the lab and staff.
· Implement digital platform to keep digital records of lab activity
· Develop and implement strategic plans to advance lab capabilities and efficiency.
· Lead a team of lab technicians – provide regular direction and set priorities, manage schedules/time/attendance, conduct performance conversations, develop training plans, etc.
· Foster a continuous learning environment within the team, encouraging collaboration and professional growth.
· Observe and diagnose mechanical issues with lab equipment and either repair or supervise the repair
· Document equipment events, breakdowns and resolutions
· Maintain equipment files and documentation
· Purchase equipment, parts and tools as needed using TaylorMade ordering systems
· Performs other related duties and assignments as required
Knowledge and Skills Requirements:
· Knowledge of Testing and Inspection methods (accuracy, precision, repeatability) - deep experience in quality and metrology is a plus
· Experience developing test methods and/or related machinery
· Knowledge of mechanical test systems including experience with machine controllers, mechanical and electromechanical components, optical systems, inspection instruments, sensors, data acquisition, and coding
· Knowledge of manufacturing methods
· Practical knowledge and expertise in experimental data collection and statistical analysis – work in six sigma or related discipline a plus
· Knowledge of materials and familiarity with their mechanical behaviors
· Experience working in testing or prototyping facility; hands-on experience with CAD and designing test fixtures
· Ability to create preventative maintenance plans
· Strong communication skills; fluent in English (written and oral)
· Excellent interpersonal skills and a collaborative mindset; eagerness to learn from and work with others; able to get buy-in on proposed solutions, and ability to create and maintain close working cross-functional relationships
· Proficient in Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
Education, Work Experience, and Professional Certifications:
· B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or similar discipline required
· 5 - 7 years of directly related experience required
· Proven work experience as a Laboratory Manager or similar role
· Strong golf knowledge preferred, including terminology, products, rules, testing, and quality
Work Environment / Physical Requirements:
· Normal office conditions with computer and phone usage
· Regular manufacturing lab conditions; exposure to dirt, dust and noise
· Must be able to stand for long periods of time
· Demonstrated ability to work with hands and operate machinery
· Ability to work weekends and extended hours as necessary
· Able to work efficiently and accurately in an atmosphere of frequent interruption
· Able to lift 25lbs, bend, stoop, reach and perform non-routine tasks as required.
· Travel may be required.
TaylorMade is a performance driven organization and our total rewards approach to compensation is designed to support this. We consider many factors in determining base compensation, including position scope, job related knowledge, education, skills, experience, and work location. The expected annual base pay range for this position is $110,000 - $120,000. Additional benefits, such as health & wellness, performance bonuses, product discounts, holidays, paid time off, etc. may also be offered in accordance with our plans.
