Hazeltine National Golf Club seeks passionate and curious individuals for an assistant golf course superintendent position at a championship-hosting facility. This is a full-time, year-round salary position.
The Assistant Golf Course Superintendent (AGCS) is a manager in the Turfgrass department who reports directly to Golf Course Superintendent (GCS) Chris Tritabaugh and collaborates with Hazeltine’s two Senior Assistant Superintendents and Equipment Manager. They are expected to assist in maintaining Championship-ready conditions by managing personnel and typical on- and off-course operations.
Candidates will be evaluated contextually and may have experiences that include, but are not limited to, recent graduation from a turfgrass or plant science program, current employment as an assistant in training, or current employment as an assistant superintendent. While experience is valuable, passion and curiosity are even more critical.
Hazeltine National Information
- Full-time staff: Golf Course Superintendent, Senior Assistant Superintendents (x2), Assistant Superintendents (this position +1 more), Equipment Manager, Assistant Equipment Manager, Horticulturalist, Golf Course Technicians (x3).
- Staff: 25-30 peak season employees, which includes the above listed, plus three summer interns for 2025.
- Typical work schedule: At Hazeltine, work/life balance is paramount, and you will be assured of maintaining it.
- In-season: Our team adheres to a standard golf course work schedule from Monday to Friday, with hours determined by various situations and the demands of golf. The assistants share weekend duties, working about one of every three weekends during the golf season. A robust member tournament schedule means it isn’t strictly every third weekend, and some weekends may be consecutive.
- Off-season: Hazeltine offers flexible time off, enabling employees to take leave without being restricted to a specific number of days. While the in-season work schedule is determined by golf, the golf course closes in winter, and the off-season provides greater flexibility. Snow removal requires each full-time employee to be on call for 4 to 5 weekends between November 1 and April 1.
- Approximately 23,000 annual rounds on the Championship course
- The club is set to open a 10-hole short course, a 33,000-square-foot putting course, and six four-bedroom villas in July 2025. Love Golf Design is handling the golf architecture, while Duininck Golf is the builder. Construction and grassing are mostly finished, but a few minor tasks will remain for the spring. Landscaping for the villas is scheduled for the spring.
- Creeping bentgrass is the fine turf surface throughout the property, with a typical mix of cool-season species in the rough.
- Hazeltine boasts a complete and brand-new fleet of Toro equipment. We nurture a strong relationship with Toro and its Minnesota distributor, MTI. The Toro Company’s global headquarters is only 30 minutes from the turfgrass facility.
- Irrigation: The championship course irrigation was installed in 1998 and features upgraded LynxSmart controllers and Watertronics pump control. The short course includes a Toro two-wire system operating Toro Infinity heads. The same Lynx central control computer manages both courses.
- Future Championships:
- 2026 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship
- 2029 Ryder Cup-the first US course to host for a second time
